My mentor Ramon Springer and supervisor Christoph Pflaum had been in touch the weeks leading up to my internship and gave me a general idea that I would be working with rate equations and solid-state laser simulations.

A few weeks in my supervisor Christoph gave me a day ticket to the Laser World of Photonics: the world’s leading laser industry event. There I could attend presentations on break-through research and actually talk with representatives of the companies whose laser products I’ve used in my own projects.

Christoph also invited me and a few co-workers to his home for a barbeque. We used his nifty solar cooker to make some delicious corn on the cob. We spent the evening eating and talking in his backyard and even got the treat of a ride around town in his brand new, fully electric BMW i3.
