During my time with Hummingbird Diagnostics, I worked with two different projects. I contributed to the Thorax Project by building a pipeline to produce models for classifying patients as responders based on their miRNA expression levels. I extensively tested and optimized the pipeline using a dataset from the Thorax Klinik Heidelberg. Additionally, I provided insight on BER techniques after researching them. I used these insights to produce results and visualizations for a white paper about the Batch Effects and the need to remove them. Hummingbird will use the white paper that I helped to write and the presentation about my Thorax project to share the results of its research with its partners.
I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to work at Hummingbird Diagnostics in Heidelberg, Germany this summer. I enjoyed getting to know and learning from my brilliant colleagues, as well as Heidelberger Ruderklub rowers. I barely spoke any English, which really helped me improve my German. I learned more about my cultural identity from living on my own in Germany, than I ever could have from staying in the United States. I enjoyed my summer so much that I hope to return to Germany soon, maybe even next summer to work with Hummingbird again.
