Fresenius is a multinational pharmaceutical company that specializes in enteral and parenteral nutrition, as well as IV oncological drugs. They also participate in the generic drug market and private hospital ownership. Fresenius encompasses four companies:  Fresenius Kabi, specializing in products for chronically ill patients; Fresenius Helios, Europe's largest owner of private hospitals; Fresenius Vamed, which manages projects and services for healthcare facilities; and Fresenius Medical Care, the world's leading producer of dialysis products.

My project included researching and developing a product to tackle medical adherence, or getting patients to be compliant with their medication and supplements. Also, as part of the scouting team, I was able to research possible startups using augmented reality in the medical field to train staff.

MIT really taught me how to think out of the box. My team wanted to see very innovative solutions that uses emerging technology. This required me to actually think of how technology that is being developed now can be used in healthcare.

Frankfurt was an amazing city. The people are nice and patient. The city is clean and vibrant. The food is amazing. There is a pastry that I would grab everyday before work. Also, if I ever felt homesick, I would go to an upscale Mexican restaurant that was even better than the Mexican food in Boston!

From this experience, I learned that multiculturalism can truly exist away from simple assimilation that we see in the United States. Here, people can experience the German lifestyle while still holding on to their foreign roots. It is this balance that makes Frankfurt a leader in the world.

During my internship I worked on a process simulation project. I was tasked with creating a set of universal Excel sheets that could hold all the data needed to accurately simulate a chemical plant. Subsequently I wrote a modeling program in MATLAB to read the Excel tables and actually simulate the plant. The purpose of the tool is to simulate the plant with the addition of possible new equipment to determine the effect on production so the company could make informed purchasing decisions. The highlight of my job included a business trip to Munich to consult with math professors from TU Munich to increase the performance of our simulation. I really enjoyed my time at Fresenius Kabi. Since I am a senior I will be finding a job in the coming months. The experience allowed me to really think about what type of job I might want in the coming years.
