Connecting People, Transcending Distances

The largest railway operator in Europe, Deutsche Bahn carries about two billion passengers each year. DB Long Distance is focused squarely on fulfilling its core mission of “connecting people, transcending distances” with a fleet of iconic white and red high-speed and long-distance trains in their home market of Germany. Headquartered in Frankfurt, DB Long Distance is a semi-independent, unsubsidized and profitable operation, with a tightly-scheduled network of over 750 trains daily.

My main project during my internship was to introduce advanced data analysis methodologies to our workflows, use machine learning to improve overcrowding predictions and feed them into a killer new visualization tool, which was developed in just two months. It has replaced archaic Excel sheets and for the first time ever allows a detailed look at passenger flow over the entire network. Revenue Management is responsible for the dynamic pricing of all national and international trains and thus billions of Euros of revenue each year. It also manages the unique challenge of passenger steering to prevent critical overcrowding on an otherwise open network with many fully flexible tickets.

I was lucky to have a dynamic and energetic host, who was committed to reforming the way we work by introducing a slew of modern tools. I participated in multiple workshops and agile sprints, which have led to visibly positive results. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of further training opportunities offered.

Over the summer, I have discovered my passion for the mission of connecting people. It was great to see everyone work together to provide customers with a better journey. Even in times of extreme crisis the entire company pulled together to be as accommodating to customers as possible. I have encountered a dynamic and welcoming team at DB that was open to my ideas and suggestions that made me feel I was really a part of the team.
