Buro Happold

A British engineering firm with well-established offices in Berlin and Munich

Buro Happold, initially established in the UK, now has a strong German presence.  The company’s two German offices, located in Berlin and Munich, take an interdisciplinary approach to design in a variety of sectors, including urban development, science and technology, cultural and educational facilities, and transportation.  Some of their best-known German projects include Berlin’s Memorial to the Murdered Jews and Dresden’s main train station.  The Berlin office also hosts the Cities consultancy team, which focuses on environmental and inclusive development consulting.

Initiated by Prince Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, Buro Happold consulted a master planning concept for a Tourism City located in the Southwest mountains of Saudi Arabia. The project included three phases: Technical Site Assessment, Development Report, Planning Framework. In the first phase, Technical Site Assessment, our team analyzed the project site through an intensive spatial and geographic analysis. Based on the physical assessment of the site, we then created development and planning reports on unique ways the site could be developed given the site’s constraints. We also applied innovative strategies that would capitalize on the site’s strengths while leveraging environmentally and socially conscious development.

Although Buro Happold is a large company, they have a spunky company culture that makes working at their firm active and enjoyable. From Young Graduate meetings to Tuesday yoga classes and Wednesday German lessons, working at Buro Happold gives you more than professional enrichment.

In addition to Berlin being a majestic place to live during the summer, my time at Buro Happold played a huge role in making this summer exciting. My initial expectations were to practice the technical skills I’ve learned during my studies, but instead I got much more.

My supervisor, Sebastian, was also an inspiring mentor and role-model who taught me critical skills such as project management and networking. Not only did I learn from my supervisor, but I also learned immensely from the rest of the Buro Happold Cities team. From side projects to lunchtime conversations, the knowledge I have acquired from my summer experience has greatly enhanced what I now seek in my education and career. This job has prompted me to enroll in courses that would help advance my career at Buro Happold and in Germany. In the meantime, my job also offered to support me with any additional resources needed for my thesis. My summer at Buro Happold was more than an internship. I am grateful about having been part of such a brilliant team and look forward to being part of their rich network.
